Mallard  Duck

(Anas platyrhynchos)

A pair of mallards at Las Gallinas Ponds, 17 October, 2005. Below, two males flying. The one on the left shows one of the blue wing bars that cannot be seen when the wings are folded; the one on the right shows the iridescent green head.

The male mallard is not the most admirable bird. He's promiscuous and dirty. But he is handsome and he knows it. Images captured at Corte Madera Creek on 8 January 2004 with Canon digital equipment.
