Northern  Flicker

or Gilded Flicker

(Colaptes auratus)

The flicker is a member of the woodpecker family, thus a fairly large bird. Our gilded flickers are very  handsome as shown by this beautiful bird. Note that he appears to have lost the salmon-striped wing primary on the right side.  These images were taken on October 12, 2004, with my Canon 10D, a 100-400 mm image stabilized zoom lens at 400 mm, plus a 1.4x extender for a total focal length of 560 mm. Incorporating the 1.6x cropping factor of the CMOS sensor in the camera, this works out to almost 900 mm equivalent 35 mm camera focal length. Because our yard is generally quite shady, I boosted the ISO speed to 400.
