Atmospheric   Phenomena :   Sundog

A sundog, or parhelia, (the short, vertical rainbow) seen just before sunset in Sonoma County, California. The sun was at the same height above the horizon 22 degrees to the right, so this is the southern sundog; a similar but less distinct northern dog was seen on the other side. Sundogs are but one of a variety of prismatic phenomena created by the refraction of light by water and ice in the atmosphere. See  http://www.meteoros.de/englisch/atlas.htm for an extensive discussion and photo gallery. Another phenomenon, a sun pillar, is seen here.
