California Towhee (Pipilo crissalis)
These are uncommon in our neighborhood in Northern California, but the west side of California and Baja California are the only habitats for this rather plain bird (according to Sibley's Guide to Birds). They are much larger than the juncos, chickadees, and titmice that are the far more common visitors to our feeder and almost the size of robins. Image captured in February 2004 with a Canon 10D camera with 100-400 mm zoom lens.
