Northern Pintail

(Anas acuta)

On my return to the Las Gallinas Sanitary Ponds on 17 October 2005, I found very large numbers of  Northern Pintails, a kind of duck I had not seen here before.  The lack of really long feathers in the tail of these ducks is apparently a seasonal phenomenon. An image of a northern pintail in eclipse plumage is HERE. Two images, please scroll down.
