Red-Shouldered Hawk
(Buteo lineatus)
This large red-shouldered hawk made its home near ours in Marin County, California, in the Spring of 2002. This shot was taken with a Nikkor 80-200 mm zoom telephoto with a Tamron 2x extender in the 400mm position in late afternoon in March. Camera Nikon F100, film Kodak Supra 100. The negative was scanned at 2700 ppi and processed in Photoshop.
Red-shouldered hawks are large (16-24 inches body length) and have a black-and-white banded tail. They prefer to hunt by perching in tree branches (like the one above) that provide a clear view of the ground. This species is found in the northern US and southern Canada. This red-shouldered hawk is puffed out against the cold — it was only in the high 30s (Fahrenheit) in the Gray Lodge Preserve when we observed him.
