Western Scrub Jay (Aphelocoma californica)
Scrub jays are very common visitors to our back yard, whether the feeder is out or not. We have a pair at the present time (February 2004) and they are probably nesting nearby. Jays are bold, omnivorous, and never still. Although I've never seen one attack a smaller bird, the small ones keep out of their way. Canon 10D digital camera with a Canon 100-400 mm L IS lens at 400 mm, ISO 200, 1/45 sec @ f/5.6.
