Tule Elk (Cervus elaphus nannodes)
This bull tule elk had a small harem of 8 or ten females in his entourage at the Pt Reyes National Seashore in Marin County, California. The tule elk is found only in California and is a subspecies of "regular" elk (Cervus canadensis). The tule elk was hunted down to near extinction and none had been seen for several years when a few were found in 1874. The herd of elk at Pt Reyes is part of a recovery program that continues here and elsewhere in California. Images with a Canon 10D and Canon 70-200 f/2.8L IS plus 2x Canon extender at ISO 400 on a cloudy 30 January 2004.
