Datura Stramonium, The Sacred Datura
Datura stramonium is a member of the henbane family and the source of pharmacologically active drugs that have been used by Native Americans in religious ceremonies for millenia. These drugs are potent anticholinergic and hallucinogenic agents. The anticholinergic property causes dry mouth, blockade of sweating, dilated pupils, blurred close vision, flushing, and constipation (see my book: Basic & Clinical Pharmacology, 9th ed, 2004, chapter 8). The hallucinogenic property is said to cause users to imagine that they can fly (among other delusions) as vividly described in Carlos Castenada's book, The Teachings of Don Juan.
