M 11 (NGC 6705), The Wild Duck Cluster, in Scutum
M11, an open cluster in the constellation Scutum, is an unusually dense example of its type. Open clusters are often much more diffuse and open. The name "wild duck" was given this cluster because in some views, the lower left edge looks like a V-shaped group of ducks in flight. This cluster is about 6200 light years distant from Earth and with an estimated population of 48,000 stars is more populous than some globular clusters.
