M42, the Great Nebula in Orion
CCD, 2005

M42 is the brightest nebula in the northern sky. It is located in the sword
of Orion and is visible to the naked eye. This is my most recent version.
| Date |
2005-03-08 |
| Scope |
Astro-Physics 130 f4
on A-P 1200GTO mount, guided with the internal guide chip.
Diffraction spikes were
generated with a set of vanes placed in the dew hood.
|
| Exposures |
6 each R, G, and B
at 10 sec, 60 sec, and 300 sec using an SBIG ST-10XME CCD camera
and Astrodon filters |
| Processing |
Each set of
equal-time exposures was acquired, calibrated, and RGB combined in Maxim
4. The 3 RGB images were then superimposed in PhotoShop and the
brightest (overexposed) portions of the longer exposure frames were
erased to reveal the properly exposed central area of the nebula. The
longest exposure RGB was high-pass filtered and overlayed on the
combination. A single pass of unsharp masking was then applied. |
